Paraportiani is Greece's most photographed church — and not one church at all: five small churches (15th-17th century) melted together across centuries beneath coats of white lime into a single sculptural mass without corners — architecture without an architect, changing with every hour's light, likened by critics to natural sculpture more than building. Its name — Our Lady of the Side Gate — comes from the medieval castle postern it adjoined, and its stance on the Kastro quarter's sea edge turns its westward face into a sunset stage: the whiteness glowing gold then rose with the waves behind. The interior is simple and mostly shut — it is an outside, not an inside, experience: twenty minutes of photographs and stillness that fall on your way to Little Venice by necessity. Early morning gives it white and empty — and the wide lens is its friend.
