Marinha do Brasil Park, the Brazilian Navy Park, is one of Porto Alegre's large urban parks, opened on 9 December 1978 on 70.7 hectares of city land to a design by the architects Ivan Mizoguchi and Rogério Malinsky. It lies in the Praia de Belas district between Borges de Medeiros and Ipiranga avenues, crossed by the Beira-Rio avenue looking out over the shore of the Guaíba. The park was laid out on the landfill that allowed the Praia de Belas district to expand, completed in the 1960s, and became a broad green space on the city's waterfront. On 12 October 1997, during the first Mercosul Biennial of visual arts, the city's first and only sculpture garden opened here, with ten works by artists from Brazil, Argentina and Bolivia, among them Amilcar de Castro and Franz Weissmann, made of stone, steel, concrete and brick. It suits walking, cycling and watching the sunset over the Guaíba.
