The Joaquim Felizardo Museum of Porto Alegre is the city's history museum, housed in the «Solar Lopo Gonçalves», or Magnolia Manor, on Rua João Alfredo in the Cidade Baixa district. The house was built between 1845 and 1853 on a farm on the old Rua da Margem as the summer home of the merchant Lopo Gonçalves Bastos, who served two terms on the city council, since the district was then countryside outside the city limits. After Lopo's death in 1872 and his wife's in 1876, his daughter Maria Luísa and her husband inherited it and made it the family's permanent home; she enlarged it, adding a small inner courtyard and a turret. Today it is one of the finest surviving 19th-century country houses in Porto Alegre, with a quiet garden and old trees. Much of the museum's collection was damaged in the 2024 flood; teachers and students of the federal university helped recover some 80,000 items, and the gardens reopened to visitors in January 2025.
