Parque São Lourenço is one of Curitiba's leading parks, opened in 1972 over 204,000 m² in the district of the same name. Its story is about water: in 1970 the Belém River flooded and the São Lourenço dam burst, and the park was created to hold back the river and restore the land around the lake that formed behind the dam. The site once had fertiliser and glue factories, and one factory's buildings became the Curitiba Creativity Centre, which runs courses and exhibitions and includes the Cleon Jacques Theatre and the Augusto Stresser Reading House. The park is free, and its large lake and paths suit a quiet family outing away from the crowds of the city's better-known parks.
