The Peterskirche is the Graben's hidden surprise: you turn off Vienna's grandest street and a green baroque dome ambushes you, wedged between buildings โ inside, an oval erupting in gold beneath a swirling dome fresco, the city's most opulent intimate baroque on its oldest church footing (by legend Charlemagne's own). Its richest secret is musical: the organ plays free every day โ usually midday and mid-afternoon โ so you sit beneath the gold for a quarter-hour of music descending from the dome: the costliest heart of Vienna's gentlest free pause. Twenty steps off the Graben, five minutes from the Stephansdom โ the jewel across every centre walk's path, at zero entry.
