A short stone bridge linking the upper town to the Bock promontory, and the only crossing to the rock spur where Luxembourg began. Its value is in its function rather than its size. The Bock is a narrow rock spur with steep drops on three sides, joined to the land on one side only. That geography is why it was chosen as the castle site in 963, and it is also why this crossing matters: whoever holds it controls access to the whole fortress. Originally a drawbridge stood here that could be raised to isolate the Bock entirely. The present stone bridge replaced it later, and beneath it run the roads cut through the rock. From the bridge you see the Grund quarter below, the Alzette valley and the city walls, and it is among the best places to understand how Luxembourg was built on three levels: an upper town on the plateau, lower quarters in the valley, and fortifications cut into the rock between them. Practical points: always open and free, and you cross it anyway on the way to the Bock casemates.

No. You will cross it on the way to the Bock casemates or the Chemin de la Corniche, so pause for a couple of minutes in the middle and look down. The value is the view and the understanding, not the bridge itself.
Start at the Place de la Constitution and the Gëlle Fra, walk the Chemin de la Corniche — described as the most beautiful balcony in Europe — cross to the Bock and its casemates, then descend to the Grund by the free lift or on foot. A circuit of about three hours covering all three levels.
