Praça Franklin Roosevelt, «Roosevelt» for short, is a public square in central São Paulo between Rua da Consolação and Rua Augusta, at the start of the famous «Minhocão» elevated road. It was built between 1968 and 1970 as a concrete complex over the underpass linking the elevated road with the east-west axis; it had been called Praça das Guianas and Praça da Consolação and was renamed after US president Franklin Roosevelt. After decades of decline it was renovated in 2011 and 2012 into a broad open space, and its skate park was enlarged in 2014 to become one of the city's best-known skating spots. Small independent theatres, cafés and bars surround it, making it a meeting place for theatregoers and cultural nightlife. The square is always open and best in the evening, when it fills with skaters and theatre crowds; keep an eye on belongings as anywhere downtown. It is close to Rua Augusta and the Copan building.
