Largo do Arouche, also known as «Flower Square» or the «Flower Market», is a square in the República district of central São Paulo, famous for the florists' stalls that settled here around 1914, after the mayor cleared the old stalls from nearby Praça da República, turning it into a market for flowers and plants that city residents still visit. The square is named after Lieutenant General José Arouche de Toledo Rendon, first director of the University of São Paulo's law school and of the Botanical Garden, who owned large tracts of land in the area. Around 1820 it was a military drill ground stretching to today's Praça da República; it has borne several names, and in the 20th century hosted a free fruit and vegetable market until 1954. It became nationally known when the sitcom «Sai de Baixo», shown from 1996 to 2002, was set here. Today the square is tree-lined with colourful flower stalls and surrounded by long-standing restaurants, including old French ones, and it makes a short walk between Praça da República and the Copan building. Visit by day and keep an eye on belongings.
