Praça da República is a park and public square covering several blocks of historic central São Paulo between Avenida Ipiranga and Avenida São João, and it went by many names before 1889. It has shady trees, a small lake with bridges and paths, and is ringed by buildings that sum up the city's architectural history. Its largest building is the Casa Caetano de Campos of 1894, protected by the state and since 1979 home of the São Paulo state education department. Around it stand modernist apartment blocks from the 1930s onwards, among them Oscar Niemeyer's Eiffel Building and Jacques Pilon's São Luiz Building, and just to the south are two of the city's most famous buildings, the wavy Copan and the Edifício Itália. Its best-known event is the Sunday open-air market selling art, clothing, jewellery, crafts and street food, with artisans from Brazil's north and north-east and neighbouring countries. The square sits above República metro station; visit by day and keep an eye on belongings.
