Jabaquara is the largest beach in central Paraty, very close to the town's historic centre, with a mangrove at its far end that serves as a nursery for many sea creatures, fish, molluscs and crustaceans. Its water is very calm and relaxing, ideal for water sports such as sailing, windsurfing, canoeing and kayaking, and for gentle family swimming away from the waves. The beach is also known for the «Bloco da Lama», the mud parade founded in 1986, which sets off from the beach into the district's streets on Carnival Saturday, its members plunging into the mangrove mud and dressing up in straw and other natural materials; about four thousand people take part. It suits a few quiet hours after a walk in the historic centre.
