The broad central square at the heart of Putrajaya, laid out as a great star and framed by the city's two most important buildings: the pink Putra Mosque on the lakeshore, and Perdana Putra, the prime minister's office, with its huge green dome in the Islamic style. Here you grasp the whole idea of Putrajaya: an administrative capital built from scratch to a grand plan. From the square the Putra Bridge, with towers drawn from Islamic architecture, runs out over the lake, and below it are the jetties for the lake cruise. That short cruise passes the mosques, bridges and government buildings from the water, with adult tickets from around RM 25 to RM 50 depending on the type and time. The square itself is free and open; the prime minister's office cannot be entered but can be photographed from outside. It is exposed to the sun with almost no shade, so morning or just before sunset is far kinder. It is the natural starting point for any Putrajaya outing: the Putra Mosque, then the lake cruise, then the Iron Mosque and the bridges. In the evening the buildings and bridges are lit and the square looks its best.
