A large man-made lake at the heart of Putrajaya, about thirty-three kilometres south of Kuala Lumpur, covering some six hundred and fifty hectares and designed to cool the city and for recreation and water sports. On its shores stand the administrative capital's best-known landmarks: the pink Putra Mosque, the Iron Mosque, the Millennium Monument and its many bridges. The best way to see the city is a boat trip on the lake. Air-conditioned glass-covered boats leave from a jetty under Putra Bridge beside Putra Mosque on a trip of about forty-five minutes, passing under the bridges and in front of government buildings and mosques, with commentary on the sights. In the evening there is a shorter sunset trip. A sightseeing cruise costs about fifty ringgit for a foreign adult according to the latest published prices, double the Malaysian rate, and there are traditional boats and shorter options for less. Prices and times can change, so check at the jetty. Around the lake are walking and cycling paths and parks, and at the jetty a small souvenir market and restaurants. Make the cruise part of a day in Putrajaya with Putra Mosque and Putra Square, ideally near sunset.
