A broad paved square on a hill above Sucre, edged by a long arcade of white arches and elegant columns, giving the finest view of the White City: red roofs, white towers and the valley, with brown mountains all around. The square faces the white walls of the old La Recoleta monastery, and small cafés with terraces dot the area, the best known with a panoramic view where visitors sit over juice or coffee until sunset. The walk up from the main square takes about fifteen minutes through quiet, steep streets between colonial houses, or take a taxi. Nearby is a lovely old neighbourhood to wander. The best time is just before sunset, as the White City glows golden and then lights up. The area is quiet and fairly safe by day. Bolivia is under a state of emergency with protests and road blockades, so check road conditions and your government's travel advice before the trip.
