From the cathedral walk over the Hohenzollern bridge (locks and trains beneath you), drop into the park and walk the bank for the panorama, then ride the cable car out and back over the river. Ice cream on the lawns completes the recipe โ return over the bridge at sunset.
It is made for them: small bright cabins, the river below, barges passing. The far side is Cologne's grand old zoo โ the combined cable-car-plus-zoo ticket builds a complete family day.
Roughly April to October in fair conditions, closed in winter and wind. If it is idle, park and panorama remain a full outing โ returning over the Deutz bridge varies the loop nicely.

The Rheinpark is Cologne's other bank: broad lawns and riverside paths directly opposite the old town, giving the finest panorama of cathedral and bridges โ the postcard picture is taken from here. Renewed for the great garden shows of the 1950s and 70s, the park kept their playful manner: fountains, sculptures, a rose garden, a little summer train. Above it, Cologne's cable car has crossed the river since 1957 โ Europe's first to span a river โ a ten-minute ride over the water linking the park to the zoo on the far bank, and one of the city's most delightful short experiences in its own right. Cross the Hohenzollern bridge with its love-locks from the cathedral, walk the bank, ride the cable car out and back โ a perfect open-air half day whose only ticket is the crossing in the sky.
