From the one villa whose library survived 79 AD: some 1,800 scrolls carbonised coal-black, unreadable for centuries — today AI and imaging are unrolling them letter by letter without opening them, the world's greatest reading adventure. The library shows samples, and its halls sometimes admit visits.
Caserta — Italy's Versailles, half an hour by train — is many times vaster with legendary gardens and needs a full day; this is the concentrated royal essence in an hour, already on your path. Chapter one here; monarchy enthusiasts continue there.
An hour along the apartments' single clear route — then its neighbours: the historic Caffè Gambrinus across the square and Galleria Umberto behind, closing the royal waterfront evening in style.

The Royal Palace commands Piazza del Plebiscito and witnessed three centuries of Neapolitan thrones: built for Spain's viceroys, flowering under the Bourbons of the Two Sicilies who made Naples a capital to rival Paris and Vienna, and closed out by the Savoys of united Italy — its façade niches carry eight kings, one from each dynasty that ruled. Inside, the royal apartments stand intact: a marble staircase of honour ranked among Europe's grandest entrances, a red-and-gold throne room, a complete little court theatre, and halls laden with chandeliers, furnishings and porcelain — frank Bourbon opulence at a fraction of the northern palaces' crowds. And one wing houses the National Library of Naples, guardian of a treasure without equal: the carbonised papyri of Herculaneum — the only library to survive from the ancient world.
