By calendar and temperament: the half-hour tour shows the hall lit and empty and climbs to the royal box โ architecturally sufficient; a performance gives it alive with its legendary acoustics. The golden answer where possible: tour by day, opera by night on a cheap upper ticket.
History moved north: unification shifted political and financial weight to Milan, making La Scala the nation's front window, while San Carlo stayed the older and, by many verdicts, the more beautiful hall โ Naples is used to this gentle injustice, and its visitor profits from it.

The San Carlo is the world's oldest working opera house: opened in 1737 โ forty years before La Scala, fifty-five before Venice's Fenice โ and still mounting its seasons in the original hall: a golden horseshoe of six box tiers in royal Bourbon blue, crowned by a throne-room of a royal box, under a ceiling fresco opening Apollo's sky. For a full century this was Europe's musical capital: Rossini then Donizetti resident directors writing their masterpieces for its stage โ and Stendhal claimed the hall "dazzled his eyes". The fire of 1816 devoured it; the Bourbons rebuilt it grander in nine months โ a speed that became proverbial. Non-opera visitors enter on short guided tours taking in hall and royal box โ and for those whose calendar allows, performance tickets start cheap in the upper tiers: real opera in the oldest hall on earth for the price of a meal.
