A museum telling the story of the sultanate and the life of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, in a striking white building with a golden dome in the city centre, opened to celebrate the Sultan's silver jubilee and one of the capital's best-known sights. In the great entrance hall stands the huge golden royal chariot used in the jubilee procession, surrounded by figures of the guard of honour in traditional dress. Other halls display crowns, thrones, swords, shields and ceremonial costumes used in the coronation. Further halls show the precious gifts presented to the Sultan by kings and heads of state, in gold, silver and crystal and works from around the world, along with photographs and documents on Brunei's modern history. Tickets are about BND 5 for non-residents, and the museum is closed on Fridays, per visitor guides. Shoes are removed at the entrance, photography is not allowed in the halls but is in the lobby, and free lockers are provided for bags.
