Guangzhou's Catholic cathedral, near the Pearl River in Yuexiu. Building began in 1863 and ended in 1888, twenty-five years later, and its walls and columns are all of granite, which is why locals call it the «Stone House». It is one of the largest Gothic Revival buildings in China, with twin towers and tall pointed windows. A stone from Jerusalem and soil from Rome were laid under its two foundation stones, carved «Jerusalem 1863» and «Roma 1863», and it has been a protected national monument since 1996. Entry is free; it is open to visitors on weekdays from 8.30 to 11.30 am and 2.30 to 5.30 pm, and at weekends from 8.30 am to 5 pm, outside services, per visitor guides. Modest dress is expected.
