Guangzhou's most famous and oldest shopping street, in Yuexiu, running more than 1.5 km from Guangwei Road down to the Pearl River; it has been the city's commercial heart for centuries and fully pedestrian since 2002. Under glass panels in its pavement you can see layers of old roads, eleven of them from the Tang dynasty to the Republic, found during works in 2002, and around it lie other sites such as the remains of the old Gongbei gate. Department stores, fashion shops, bookshops and long-established Cantonese brands line the street, with dessert shops and restaurants in the side lanes. Walking around is free at any time, per visitor guides. Evenings are busy with shoppers.
