The best-known mosque in Ho Chi Minh City, on Dong Du Street in the heart of District 1, a short walk from the grand hotels and the Opera House. It was built in 1935 by the city's South Indian Muslim community, led by the textile merchant J. M. Mohamed Ismael, and is also known as the Jamia Al-Musulman Mosque. Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi once visited it. The white-and-green building has four slender minarets at its corners, an arched veranda and a courtyard with an ablution pool. Its congregation today includes Vietnamese Muslims, many of them from the Cham community, alongside traders and visitors from India, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Middle East, and Friday prayers are the busiest of the week. Dong Du Street and the lanes around the mosque are the easiest place in the city centre to find halal food, with Malaysian, Indian and Middle Eastern restaurants and small stalls selling halal snacks. Those visiting rather than praying should dress modestly and avoid prayer times; women are asked to cover their hair.
