It is the walk's geometric centre โ between fortress, Getreidegasse and Quartier: its half hour falls naturally into any route. Sunday at ten for the choral mass, for those at ease in reverence โ a sound experience beyond purchase.

Salzburg Cathedral is the first great baroque north of the Alps: rebuilt by Italian architects (1628) after fire, arriving as a little Rome in pale marble under its dome โ and becoming the model for all German baroque. Its musical station is singular: Mozart was baptised here (the font remains) and served as its organist โ five organs face each other around the dome, and Sunday's choral mass is a known free musical event. Its two squares are the city's stages: Domplatz with the Virgin's column, where the Salzburg Festival opens with Jedermann each summer, and Residenzplatz with its grand fountain โ the cathedral anchoring Salzburg's scene in stone and sound.
