The city museum of Shenzhen, founded in 1981 and formally opened in 1988, holding more than twenty thousand historical and cultural objects, mostly from the city and its region, across several sites, the best known being the Museum of History and Folk Culture at the Civic Center. It tells the region's story from prehistory through the old walled town of Nantou, coastal villages and fishing, to Shenzhen's transformation after 1980 into China's first special economic zone. Its most striking galleries show how a small fishing village on the Hong Kong border grew into a giant city of millions within a few decades, through photos, models and documents. Entry is free, though advance online booking may be needed; it opens Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–18:00, closed Mondays, per visitor guides. It's close to Lianhuashan Park and the Ping An tower.
