A historic quarter on the slope between Jiefangbei and the bank of the Yangtze, whose name means «Eighteen Steps», after the old stone stairway that linked the upper city to the river; for decades it was one of the best-known working-class neighbourhoods of the old city. The quarter has been restored and rebuilt, with winding stepped lanes between old-style brick and timber houses, shops, cafés, restaurants and teahouses, keeping the feel of old Chongqing's hillside life. Visitors get a real sense of the hill city here, with streets climbing and dropping and houses stacked one above another; it's a short walk from Jiefangbei and Hongyadong. Wandering is free and open all day, and it's loveliest in the evening when the lanterns light up. There are many steps, so wear comfortable shoes; many local snacks contain pork.
