The regional museum for Šibenik and its surroundings, occupying the **Venetian governor''s palace** immediately beside the cathedral — a fourteenth-century building rebuilt in the seventeenth after war damage. The collection covers the region from prehistory to the twentieth century: **Liburnian** finds (the Illyrian people who held this coast before the Romans), Roman material from Scardona, displays on the long Venetian period and how it governed, and a section on the **Ottoman sieges** and the four fortresses. The section that sets it apart from any other regional museum is on the **Homeland War of 1991-1995**: Šibenik was shelled and besieged, and the cathedral''s own dome was hit. The displays on it are physical and measured, and do not turn the events into spectacle. Note: labels are mainly in Croatian with partial English — ask for a leaflet. The building itself is part of the visit: an internal courtyard, stone vaults, and a small garden behind it on the sea walls.

In some places yes, in others no. The **coastal tourist cities** — Dubrovnik, Šibenik, Zadar — have been almost entirely restored, and a visitor notices nothing unless looking for it: new red tile among Dubrovnik''s roofs, or a panel explaining the hit on Šibenik cathedral''s dome. **Inland**, though — around Knin, in Slavonia and around Vukovar — the marks are still plain in abandoned buildings and shell-pocked walls, and Vukovar deliberately preserves ruined buildings as memorials. ⚠ The subject is **personally sensitive** for many people here, and almost every family was affected; it is not usually raised in casual conversation with locals unless they raise it themselves. Museums are the right place to ask.
