St Florin's is Vaduz's principal church and the seat of Liechtenstein's archbishop — a neo-Gothic church of grey stone (1873) designed by the Austrian architect Friedrich von Schmidt (of Vienna's City Hall), with a slender pointed spire rising above the Städtle's roofs directly beneath the castle. Small and plain inside with modern stained glass and high arches, its importance lies in its function: state masses and the reigning family's funerals are held here, and in its side yard is the **princely family's burial ground**, a modern crypt holding Liechtenstein's recent princes — among them Prince Franz Josef II (died 1989), who reigned 51 years and was the first prince actually to live in the country. It only became a "cathedral" in 1997, when the Vatican created an independent archdiocese of Vaduz. On the Städtle among the museums — a short free stop on the route.
