The Heidelberg Staustufe is an installation on the river Neckar combining a small weir, a navigation lock and a power station. Its job is to raise the water level so river freight can pass, and it generates electricity from the flow at the same time. It is not a tourist sight in the ordinary sense, but watching boats work through the lock is enjoyable: the boat enters, the gates close, the water rises or falls, then the far gate opens. It is free, with a designated walkway to stand on. Good for anyone walking the riverbank, or for children who like machinery.

It is not a tourist destination. But it makes an enjoyable stop if you are already walking the Neckar bank, particularly with children who like machines and boats. Do not make a special trip.
There is no published timetable; it depends on freight and tourist traffic. You may arrive as a boat is passing, or wait a long time. Mornings and early evenings are usually busier.
Twenty minutes if you are lucky and a boat comes through. Make it part of a longer walk along the bank between the old town and the gardens.
