The Alberto Maranhão Theatre is Natal's most traditional theatre, in the historic Ribeira district, and is listed as heritage by the state of Rio Grande do Norte. It was designed by the engineer José de Berredo, begun in 1898 and opened in 1904 as the «Carlos Gomes Theatre», after the famous Brazilian opera composer. During governor Alberto Maranhão's second term it closed for renovation, reopening on 19 July 1912 with an operetta by a Spanish zarzuela and opera company. In 1957 mayor Djalma Maranhão renamed it after the governor who had renewed it. It was renovated again and reopened on 24 March 1960, and in 1988 the José Augusto Foundation began a full restoration of the dressing rooms, auditorium, garden and stage to bring back its original look. With its elegant façade and garden it is one of old Natal's most beautiful buildings, seen on a walk through Ribeira, and it stages plays and music with tickets by programme, so check what's on before you visit.
