An arts centre in a neoclassical building on a prominent corner near Syntagma Square, joining modern art exhibitions to a concert hall. It was founded by the banker and art collector Vassilis Theocharakis and his wife Marina in 2004, the building itself dating from the early twentieth century and restored for the purpose. The programme is the variable: temporary exhibitions alternate between modern Greek and European art, and it has hosted work by major international artists alongside retrospectives of Greek painters. The basement holds a music hall used for piano recitals, chamber music and lectures. This means what you see depends entirely on the date of your visit — check the programme before going, as the place may be between exhibitions and closed. On the upper floor is a café looking towards Lycabettus hill and over the street, among the quieter places to sit in this busy district.

The National Gallery, reopened after a major extension, shows Greek painting from the nineteenth century to today — that is the foundation. The Museum of Cycladic Art joins antiquities to contemporary exhibitions. The Benaki Museum across its several branches covers everything from icons to photography. And the Stavros Niarchos centre south of the city hosts cultural events in a Renzo Piano building.
Concerts have no language of course, and their programme is mostly classical. Lectures and talks are largely in Greek. Exhibition labelling is usually in both Greek and English, which is standard in Athens's larger museums. Check the event page if you are booking for something specific.
