The Thermas Antônio Carlos is the building that made Poços de Caldas famous, a mineral-water town in the mountains of southern Minas Gerais. It was built between 1928 and 1931 and opened in March 1931, designed by the architect Eduardo Pederneiras in an eclectic style with neoclassical touches, and is considered Brazil's first modern thermal-treatment establishment. Its water comes from sulphurous springs, and today it offers sulphur-water baths, a sauna and other treatments, priced from R$22 to R$462 depending on the service: a sulphur bath is about R$40 and the sauna R$30 for two hours. It opens Wednesday to Saturday and on public holidays 9:00-19:00 and Sunday 9:00-14:00, closed Monday and Tuesday. It stands in the town centre, a few steps from the park where the cable car starts.
