A shaded promenade along the western wall of Castle Hill, lined with chestnut trees and benches, looking out over the Buda hills rather than the Danube. That opposite orientation is what makes it useful. The eastern side of Castle Hill — the Fisherman's Bastion and the view of the Parliament — is crowded all day. This promenade is on the other side of the same hill, minutes away on foot, and is often nearly empty. The walk runs beside the old wall towers, and the remains of the fortifications can be seen close up. The view is over the green Buda hills and Gellért Hill, quieter and greener than the famous city panorama. It carries the name of Tóth Árpád, a Hungarian poet of the early twentieth century. Practical point: free and always open, reached on foot from anywhere in the castle quarter. This is the best place in the quarter to sit and rest, and worth walking after visiting the crowded sights on the other side.

The western side of Castle Hill, Budapest
Walk across the castle quarter to its western edge — the quarter is small and can be crossed in ten minutes. From the Fisherman's Bastion head west through the inner streets and you reach the wall and the promenade. There is little signage, which is part of why it stays quiet.
Start early at the Fisherman's Bastion and the Matthias Church before the groups arrive, then the palace and its museums, then finish on this promenade to rest away from the crowds before descending. The whole quarter takes half a day to a day depending on how many museums you enter.
