The Pey-Berland is Bordeaux cathedral's bell tower — standing alone metres away from it, by fifteenth-century engineering wisdom: the great bells' swing would have cracked the Gothic cathedral, so the bells got a freestanding house named for the archbishop who ordered it. The climb is 231 tight spiral steps to two terraces: from the upper one all Bordeaux spreads out — the unified sea of tiled roofs that made UNESCO list the entire city, the river in its golden arc, and the cathedral below from an angle no one else gets. On its tip a gilded Virgin gleams from afar, and its bells — the heaviest eleven tonnes — still ring from this independent house.

The stair is stiff but relatively short — ten minutes up with pauses — and the reward runs all directions.

From about eight, yes, happily — the stair is an adventure and the city below a game. Younger means carrying in a tight stairwell, not worth it.
