Because passage is a fragile privilege: the courtyards are private, inhabited property, kept open by city agreements with owners for as long as visitors behave. One loud group closes a door forever — it has happened. Cross as if in someone's home, because you are.
Vieux Lyon is Renaissance-pretty and concentrated — start there, certainly. Croix-Rousse is nineteenth-century working-class: longer, plainer passages with the truer story (the stair-famous Cour des Voraces among them). Addicts take both, a day apart.

The traboules are Lyon's architectural secret: covered passages cutting through the bellies of houses from street to street, dug by a narrow city squeezed between river and hill — perfected by silk merchants moving cloth dry through rain. Old Lyon and Croix-Rousse hold hundreds; dozens open free to walkers. The experience is an explorer's game: an ordinary wooden door on Rue Saint-Jean swallows you into a dim passage, then a sudden Renaissance courtyard with a spiral stair in a pink tower, arches overhead, then another door ejects you into another street. The most famous is the Long Traboule, four courtyards from 54 Rue Saint-Jean to 27 Rue du Bœuf. The passages served Resistance fighters escaping a Gestapo that got lost in them — entering the city's moral legend too.
