Valea Morilor Park, the «Valley of the Mills», is a large lakeside park in the Buiucani district of Chișinău, Moldova's capital. City residents come here to walk and watch the sunset, about 1 km in a straight line from Stephen the Great Park. The park was laid out in 1950, designed by a team led by the architect Robert Kurz. It originally covered about 114 hectares, including a 34-hectare lake ringed by a 2.5 km loop path. It holds the open-air Summer Theatre, built in 1957 with room for about 6,700 people and said to be the largest open-air theatre in Europe. Poplars, horse chestnuts, acacias, maples, limes and black pines grow in the park, and ducks swim on the lake. A long wooden bridge with a dark railing crosses the water, the trees turn yellow and red in autumn, and from the western bank the sun drops over the calm water at dusk. The park is open and made for a long stroll around the loop path. It is at its best on summer evenings and in autumn when the leaves turn. There is also a children's play area and a boat station.
