Vienna's city hall, and one of the Ring's defining buildings: neo-Gothic, spired, with a façade a hundred and fifty metres long, built in the 1880s to declare that the city itself — not the emperor — had become a power in its own right. On top of the central tower stands the Rathausmann, a six-metre armoured figure that became a Viennese emblem. The story told locally is that the tower was kept lower than the Votive Church out of deference, and then the knight was added on top so it outreached it anyway — a municipal workaround. The interior is not a museum but it is open: the arcaded inner courtyard can be entered free during working hours, is among Vienna's finest, and hosts summer concerts. Free guided tours run on set days into the great ceremonial hall and council chambers.
