The Vondelpark is Amsterdam's great park and green beating heart: forty-five hectares of English-style lawns, lakes and tree avenues (1865), welcoming ten million visitors a year — yet roomy enough for all, so it never feels crowded. Amsterdammers come to run, cycle, picnic and lie on the grass in the first sun. It is the city's daily life more than a sight: an open-air theatre with free summer shows, cafés on the lakes, and the statue of the poet Vondel it is named for. Steps from the Museum Square, it is the ideal natural break after the Rijks and Van Gogh. Take it as the locals do: an unhurried stroll, coffee on the water, and watching Amsterdam live — the cheapest and truest of the city's pleasures.
