One of China's most beautiful universities, founded in 1921 by Tan Kah Kee, a Chinese businessman based in Singapore, on the coast of south Xiamen Island between the sea and the hills; it ranks among the country's leading universities. Its buildings are famous for the «Jiageng» style linked to its founder: Western-style stone walls and arcades topped by traditional red Chinese roofs, around Furong Lake, gardens and tree-shaded walkways. Its best-known spots include the Furong tunnel, covered in murals painted by students, and the campus lake that mirrors the buildings; it's a favourite with Chinese families and school groups. Visits are free but need advance booking through the university's WeChat system, up to three days ahead, with places drawn by lottery since January 2026, per visitor guides; you can't book at the gate.
