The largest Gothic civic complex in Transylvania: Altemberger House, Sibiu's old town hall since 1549, is a cluster of houses and towers around a courtyard of carved galleries and outer stairs โ the building itself the first exhibit, before what it holds. Inside is the history branch of the Brukenthal museum: tools and seals of the Saxon guilds, the silver and gold treasury of Sibiu's goldsmiths who were the region's most famous, the arms room, a medieval physician's laboratory, the courtroom with its instruments of torture โ and the Roman and Dacian basement with the county's antiquities. The truest place to grasp how Saxon guilds governed an entire city for five centuries. It stands directly behind the cathedral, and its combined ticket with Brukenthal saves.
