Romania's first cast-iron bridge and its most famous urban legend: built in 1859 to cross between the Small Square and the Lower Town over Ocnei street, slender in its iron ornament and the city's crest — the name from the tales: it is said to creak and shake under anyone who lies, that merchants who cheated were thrown from it, that girls swore their virtue on it and it collapsed beneath the false. The likelier origin is linguistic: the German "lying bridge" (reclining) heard as "bridge of lies". The bridge itself takes minutes, but its surroundings an hour: the Small Square with its Gothic arcades and cafés, the House of Arts with its arches, and the view from the bridge over the Lower Town's roofs with the cathedral spire behind you — the most photographed angle in Sibiu, above all lit at night.
