Sibiu's tallest spire: the Gothic Lutheran cathedral (fourteenth century) lifts its tower 73 metres above the small, quiet Huet Square, the highest in Transylvania, climbed by two hundred steps to a gallery over the roofs with their eyes and the mountains on the horizon. The nave is Gothic with a vast Crucifixion mural of 1445, an organ among Romania's largest (1914), and rows of tombstones of Saxon governors and pastors set into the walls — among them the son of Vlad the Impaler, Mihnea the Bad, murdered at the door in 1510. Recent restoration returned the colour of the stone and glass. Behind it stand the parish house and the Brukenthal school, and beside it the covered Stairs Passage descends to the Lower Town — Sibiu's finest photographic corner.
