The square that served as the assembly point from which the ghetto's inhabitants were taken to the death camps. It was redesigned in 2005 with a memorial of sixty-eight empty iron chairs spread across it, standing for the furniture people left in the streets as they were marched away. The pharmacy stands on its edge.
Start in the old Jewish quarter of Kazimierz north of the river, then cross to Podgórze: Ghetto Heroes Square, the Eagle Pharmacy, the remains of the ghetto wall, then Schindler's Factory. A full and heavy day — take breaks, and do not try to compress it alongside lighter sights on the same day.

A pharmacy on Ghetto Heroes Square in Podgórze that was the only pharmacy inside the Kraków ghetto, and is today a museum. Its owner, Tadeusz Pankiewicz, was a non-Jewish Pole. When the ghetto was created around his pharmacy in 1941, he refused the offer of relocation to the other side and asked to stay — the only non-Jew permitted to live inside the ghetto. He remained until its liquidation in 1943. What he did in those two years is documented: he gave out medicines free, hid people in the pharmacy, carried letters, documents and valuables out past the walls, and supplied hair dyes and sedatives that helped conceal children and smuggle them out. He later wrote his testimony, The Cracow Ghetto Pharmacy, among the most important records of life inside it. Israel honoured him as Righteous Among the Nations. The museum is small and carefully designed, reconstructing the pharmacy with its drawers. The visit is short but heavy, and it pairs naturally with Schindler's Factory and the nearby remains of the ghetto wall.
