AquaRio, the Marine Aquarium of Rio de Janeiro, opened on 31 October 2016 in Gamboa in the revitalised port zone, in a former state warehouse; with about 26,000 m² of built area it is described as the largest marine aquarium in South America. Its 28 tanks hold 4.5 million litres of salt water and thousands of animals of some 350 species from all the oceans, including nurse, whitetip reef and sand tiger sharks. A tunnel runs through the Great Ocean Tank, and extras (paid separately) include sleeping in the tunnel, diving in a tank and behind-the-scenes tours. Tickets cost about R$160 (half price R$80 for Brazilians and residents), cheaper when bought a day ahead; open daily 9:00-17:00, last entry 16:00.
