Praça da Harmonia, officially Praça Coronel Assunção, is a small square in the Gamboa district of central Rio de Janeiro, ringed by old buildings, with a bandstand at its centre that gives it a small-town feel among benches, game tables, trees and gardens. Its site held the «Mercado da Harmonia», created to take pressure off the municipal market on Praça XV, in the district that was the heart of the old port. Gamboa is part of Rio's «Little Africa», the area tied to the history of enslaved Africans and the nearby Valongo Wharf, and to the birth of samba in the homes of the Bahian community. The square regularly hosts popular cultural groups, among them a stilt-walkers' orchestra and local carnival bands. The «Harmonia» stop on light-rail line 1 is right beside it, making it a good stop on a walk between the Valongo Wharf, AquaRio, Praça Mauá and the Museum of Tomorrow. Visit by day.
