From the middle of the bridge or from the Neustadt bank opposite. From there the whole old town lines up on the water: the Frauenkirche, Brühl's Terrace and the Residenzschloss. After dark, when the buildings are lit, is far better.
Five to ten minutes on foot, twenty to thirty with stops for photographs. It is the natural route between the old town and the Neustadt, so you cross it anyway.
The site is very old and has carried a stone bridge since the Middle Ages, but the present structure dates from 1907 to 1910. It was deliberately built in baroque style to match the old town, repaired after wartime damage, and later closed to cars.

The Augustusbrücke is Dresden's oldest bridge, linking the old town with the Neustadt across the Elbe. A stone bridge has stood here since the Middle Ages, and the present one with its stone arches was built between 1907 and 1910 in baroque style to sit properly among the old town around it. Today the bridge carries only pedestrians, cyclists and trams, having been closed to cars, which makes walking it calm and easy. From the middle you get Dresden's most famous view: the dome of the Frauenkirche and all the old town towers along the riverbank in a single frame.
