**A Romanesque church just outside the walls, holding a carved tomb among the finest 12th-century sculpture to survive** — at the eastern gate. Built from the **12th century** in yellow sandstone and granite — ⚠ **so its colour differs from the grey of the walled city** and catches the eye at once. ✅ **Its western doorway** is among the most important Romanesque portals in Spain: **apostles carved on either side of the entrance** in a manner close to the doorways of the Camino de Santiago. ⚠ **Its treasure is the tomb of Saints Vincent, Sabina and Christeta** — **three siblings killed here in the 4th century** by tradition; ✅ **the tomb is covered in relief telling their story panel by panel**, **beneath a stone canopy**. ✅ **A crypt beneath it** stands on the rock where the account says they died.

**Romanesque is heavy, dark and round-arched; Gothic is light, bright and pointed — and the difference is structural before it is aesthetic.** ✅ **Romanesque** (about 1000–1200): **semicircular arches**, **very thick walls**, ⚠ **and few small windows** — **because the wall itself carries the roof**, **so every opening weakens it**; **the result is a dark, heavy, solemn interior**, **with massive short columns** and **barrel vaults**. ✅ **Gothic** (from about 1140): **pointed arches**, **ribbed vaults**, **and external flying buttresses** — ⚠ **and those three together carry the roof's weight to defined points outside the wall** instead of spreading it along the whole wall; ✅ **so the wall is freed from load**, **and can be opened with enormous windows**, **letting light in and the roofs rise**. ✅ **The practical test in three glances**: **(1) the arch** — round or pointed? **(2) The windows** — small or vast? **(3) The exterior** — a solid wall or flying buttresses? ⚠ **The transition was gradual** — **and many churches contain both**, **Ávila itself an example**: **San Vicente is Romanesque and the cathedral early Gothic**.
