**Four stone columns and a cross on a hill outside the city — and the best view of Ávila's complete walls anywhere** — 1.5 km west across the river. ⚠ **The monument itself is very plain**: **four Doric columns carrying a square entablature with a cross at the centre**, built in **1566** as a **wayside station of prayer** on the road out of the city. ⚠ **It is linked to Teresa of Ávila**: **here her uncle caught her and her brother as children**, fleeing by the account **to the land of the Muslims in search of martyrdom** — ✅ **and the story is always retold on this spot**. ✅ **But the reason to come is the view**: **from here you see the whole walled circuit at once** — **2.5 km of granite and 88 towers** — **and this is the image of Ávila you know**. ⚠ **It cannot be had from inside the city.**

**It is in her own writing — but read it as she wrote it, not as it is told to visitors.** ✅ **The source**: **Teresa tells the story herself in *The Life*** — **that she and her brother Rodrigo, as children, resolved to go «to the land of the Moors» to be killed for the faith and go straight to heaven**; ⚠ **and that they left the city and their uncle caught them and brought them back**. ✅ **So the tale comes from her pen rather than popular tradition** — **which distinguishes it from many saints' stories**. ⚠ **But a qualification matters**: **Teresa wrote *The Life* in her fifties, some forty years after the event**, ⚠ **and at her confessor's command** — **so it is a spiritual autobiography written for a purpose**, **selecting and highlighting what serves the account of her formation**. ✅ **And she herself tells it indulgently about her own childhood** — **not as a miracle but as the enthusiasm of a child who had read the martyrs' lives**. ⚠ **Tying the episode to this particular spot is a later tradition** — **she names no place**. ✅ **So the story is documented as memory, and the location is tradition**; **a distinction worth stating**.
