A museum buried in a dune: Beelden aan Zee hides beneath Scheveningen's sands with open-sky light courts — Holland's only museum devoted to modern sculpture, its theme the human: body and face across continents' schools from Zadkine to Niki de Saint Phalle. Its genius is the hiding itself: from the street, no building — you descend the dune into successive halls and sculpture courts under sky with sand insulating, the sea glinting through framed apertures — Wechgelaer's 1994 architecture a lesson in humility before nature. And on the public boulevard above, its famous free gift: 'Fairytale Sculptures by the Sea' — giant wry bronzes of the herring eater and the open-book reader — Scheveningen's first selfie, and a door tempting descent to the buried treasure.

A collecting couple (the Scholtens) gave their collection conditioning that no museum mar the historic queen's dune — so the architect dug literally beneath, preserving the sandline. Municipalities refused any protrusion — the result a world-taught hidden architecture icon: the Dutch answer when building is banned.
The famous pier with wheel and sea bungee, the historic Kurhaus resort dome, kilometres of sand with beach restaurants — the fishing harbour south for ritual herring. The museum sits exactly mid-thread.
