A collecting couple (the Scholtens) gave their collection conditioning that no museum mar the historic queen's dune โ so the architect dug literally beneath, preserving the sandline. Municipalities refused any protrusion โ the result a world-taught hidden architecture icon: the Dutch answer when building is banned.

A museum buried in a dune: Beelden aan Zee hides beneath Scheveningen's sands with open-sky light courts โ Holland's only museum devoted to modern sculpture, its theme the human: body and face across continents' schools from Zadkine to Niki de Saint Phalle.
