Córdoba's Cabildo, the town council house of Spanish times, is one of the last colonial buildings of its kind in Argentina, facing Plaza San Martín in the heart of the city. Building began in the early seventeenth century and it changed much over time, its most important rebuilding in the second half of the eighteenth century. Its long white facade has arcaded galleries on two floors, with quiet courtyards inside. Through history it housed local government, then a jail and police headquarters; today it is a cultural centre and museum hosting art exhibitions and tourist information. Entry to the courtyards and exhibitions is usually free, and it is a good starting point for a walk around the nearby Jesuit Block and the historic centre.
