Café de los Angelitos, the «Little Angels' Café», is one of Buenos Aires' oldest tango cafés, opened by an Italian immigrant in 1890 as Bar Rivadavia on what was then the city's edge, becoming a meeting place for improvising folk poets and singers. From 1912 the legendary singer Carlos Gardel made it his gathering place with friends as his career began, and a famous tango named after it was written in 1944. It is one of the city-protected «notable bars» valued for their history, restored in period style, with old photographs telling the story of the neighbourhood and of tango. By day it serves coffee and pastries; in the evening it hosts tango dinner shows, ticketed and booked ahead. You can sit for a coffee without attending the show, and the café is close to Congress and the Confitería del Molino.
