Casa das Rosas is a French classical mansion at the start of Avenida Paulista, one of the last houses left from the days when the avenue was a street of coffee barons' mansions, before skyscrapers filled it. It was designed by the office of Ramos de Azevedo, São Paulo's best-known architect, in 1930 and finished in 1935, and stayed the Ramos de Azevedo family home until 1985. On 22 October 1985 the state heritage council listed it, and after restoration it reopened on 19 September 1995 as a cultural space. Since 2004 it has carried the name «Haroldo de Campos Space for Poetry and Literature», after the poet whose family donated his library, and it is devoted to poetry and literature with courses, workshops, exhibitions and readings drawing about 80,000 visitors a year. In front of the mansion is the small rose garden that gave it its name, an oasis among the avenue's towers. Entry is free, it has a garden café, and it makes a good short stop on a walk along Paulista, especially on Sundays when the avenue is closed to cars.
