The São Paulo Cultural Centre is a public institution of the city's culture department, opened in 1982, and one of the city's main cultural spaces, among the first in São Paulo to be a «cultural centre» in the full sense of the term. Under one roof it brings together the Municipal Pinacoteca art collection, the Oneyda Alvarenga record library and the collection of the Folklore Research Mission gathered by the writer Mário de Andrade, along with libraries, exhibition halls, course rooms, theatres and a cinema. It stands on land expropriated for the works on the first metro line and was first designed as an extension of the overcrowded Mário de Andrade public library, by the architects Eurico Prado Lopes and Luiz Benedito de Castro Telles. It lies by Vergueiro metro station, so it is easy to reach, and makes half a day among exhibitions, libraries and shows.
